Hey there, I'm Holly Marsh, the illustrator/nerd running the show here at hollymarshmallow.
I love to draw, and write, and I'm so grateful you're here to read the weird stuff that comes outta my brain sometimes. Â

There is ALWAYS a song playing in my head. Sometimes it's one I enjoy and intentionally keep there. Other times, it's an earworm that invaded my brain, completely uninvited (or planted there by a pranking family member), and will play the most annoying part on loop. For as long as it can.
To combat this, I listen to music a lot. It's why I curated playlists for my Patreon peeps during my cancer treatment and throughout the pandemic. It's why I started (and abandoned!) a Substack where I shared new music I discovered and liked last year.Â
Abandoned platforms aside (I hope to revive either of those at some point this year! I'm working on it!), music is such a huge part of my life. This article about being the self-appointed DJ in the family resonated with me, and the DJ badge is one I wear with pride in my family.
So OF COURSE I had music playing during my 100 painting project.
But I can't let my Apple Music library go wild on shuffle. I've tried- it's an eccentric mix of electronic, dance, classic rock, pop, a little bit country (yeah I said it), and video game music covers and music from cartoons, TV shows, movies on the humorous side (Flight of the Conchords, anyone?) sprinkled in.Â
I've found that I can't paint to everything. Tunes on the mellower end of the spectrum work better than super energetic death metal and songs that waffle between quiet and loud.
Over the years, I've created a pared-down playlist that I continue to zhuzh, and when I was struggling with launching this collection of paintings with the specific but oh-so-boring "Painting Number 42," that playlist came in handy!
All the paintings have been named after songs in my painting playlist. And you can listen to the playlist right here:Â
